Festival Jazz in Japan 2010 : Ladies in Jazz



Le festival de Jazz de la maison de la culture du Japon sera cette annee entierement feminin. C est en effet l une des caracteristiques du Jazz Nippon qui, depuis longtemps, a donne une place importante aux artistes feminines. C est une idee du nouveau directeur artistique de festival, Monsieur Hisao Ebine , de mettre en valeur cette originalite de la scene du Jazz Japonaise. Ebine san connait par ailleurs parfaitement la scene du Jazz francaise, comme il a ete le distributeur des labels Dreyfus et label bleu et qu il travaille maintenant au Japon avec Richard Galliano, Eric Legnini, Yaron Herman et Giovanni Mirabassi entre autres. Laissons nous donc charmer par ce connaisseur et ses artistes.

Junko Onishi trio le 25.02


Le trio de la pianiste Junko Onishi, que nous avons accueilli a Paris au printemps 2009 avec Nicolas Folmer, Mauro Gargano, Remi Vignolo. Junko a fait une brillante carriere aux Etats Unis aux cotes de Kenny Garret, Joe Lovano, Jackie Mac Lean, Billy Higgins, Ron Carter sous le label Blue Note. Junko est une artstes a forte visibilite aux etats unis et au Japon. Il nous faut l accueillir comme il se doit en France Elle sera accompagne de son trio

Naoko Terai 4tet et Richard Galliano le 26.02

La violoniste Naoko Terai qui popularise le violon dans le monde du Jazz nippon. Sa popularite est immense au Japon Elle a deja ete invite aux ceremonies des Django D Or en France. Elle peut revendiquer l heritage de Stephane Grapelli. Elle a accueilli au festival de Jazz de Tokyo en 2008 L accordeoniste Richard Galliano qu elle retrouvera a Paris La voici donc en 5tet

Aki Takase / Kimiko Itoh duo le 27.02

La France n est pas le seul pays europeen a accueillir et herbeger des artistes de Jazz Japonais C est aussi le cas de l angleterre, de l espagne, de la Hollande et de l Allemagne La pianiste Aki Takase, residente a Berlin, a longtemps anime la scene du Jazz avant garde en Europe et au Japon. C est une partenaire priviliegiee de Louis Sclavis. La chanteuse Kimiko Itoh, dans le respect de la tradition, se joindra a elle pour un duo contraste. En perspective des standards de Jazz revisite, des poemes Haiku jazzifies pour une rencontre tres creative entre tradition et modernite

Junko Onishi


Junko Onishi Biographie de Wikipedia
Born in Kyoto, Japan, and grew up in Tokyo, Japan. After graduating from Berklee College, Boston, in '89, she moved to New York and started her career as a Jazz pianist. By the time she came back to Japan and organized her own trio with her classmates of Berklee, she was already one of the most promised Japan- born jazz musician, with rich expiriences by working with Joe Hendeson, Kenny Garrett, Betty Carter and the Mingus Dynasty. During '90?'91, she performed and recorded with her trio through out Japan and in January of '93, she realesed her first album "Wow" from EMI. This album became a best-seller in Japan and recieved the "Japanese Jazz Award" from Swing Journal which is the most popular jazz magazine in Japan. After her success of her first album, she soon relased her second album "Cruisin'", with Billy Higgins and Rodney Whitaker. In April of '94, "Cruisin'" was released from Blue Note U.S.A. and in May she performed at the Village Vanguard for a week as the first Japanese artist to perform with his/her own group. In September her memorable performance at the Village Vanguard was released as "Live at the Village Vanguard" and this album recieved many prizes such as the Silver prize of Swing Journal Jazz Award "Jazz Player of the Year", "Album of the Year", "Combo of the Year", "Pianist of the Year". These prizes were elected by the fans and readers of Swing Journal, and pushed her to the top of the Japanese Jazz scene at once. After her astonishing debut and success, she performed on the stage, at recordings, at TV shows and appeared on magazines aggresively and enthusiastically as the leading jazz pianist of Japan, but after her concert in Osaka in March of '00, she suddently declares a long rest and recreation. In '07, she comes back with more brilliance to the scene and started to perform. Her grooving and powerful performance became more sophisticated, and the dynamic expression and sure techniques of her piano playing fascinated more audience than ever. Currently she is performing both with her own trio and solo.

With an ever-changing technique, she is known to leading her full-house live hall audience into a jubilant mood with accidental performances. Her original album released every year makes an extraordinary record in sales, and her popularity keeps growing. She has kept the number one spot since 1996 for the most popular Instrumental/Other Instruments Division of the Swing Journal Magazine popularity vote.

Aki Takase


Aki Takase Biographie de Wikipedia:
Raised in Tokyo, she studied music at Tohogakuen Music University.[1] Starting in 1978, she performed and recorded in the USA with Lester Bowie, David Liebman, John Zorn and others. Since 1981, she performed repeatedly at the Berlin Jazz Festival in Germany. For many years, she has been working with her husband[2] Alexander von Schlippenbach, Eugene Chadbourne, Han Bennink, Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Fred Frith and others, and in duets with Maria Joćo, David Murray and Rudi Mahall. In various projects, Takase has dealt with famous jazz musicians: Ellington (1990), Monk (1994), Dolphy (1998), W.C. Handy (2002), Fats Waller (2004), O. Coleman (2006). Since 1987, she has been living in Berlin.

Kimiko Itoh


Kimiko Itoh Biographie de Wikipedia:
Kimiko Ito or Kimiko Itoh (Ito Kimiko, born 1946-07-11[1][2]) is a Japanese jazz singer. She was born on the island of Shodoshima in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. After graduating from Musashino Art University with a degree in oil painting, she studied under Yasushi Sawada.[2] In 1982 she made her debut with her first jazz album, "Birdland". In 1989, she released the album "FOLLOW ME" simultaneously in Japan and the United States. It ranked 16th in the Radio & Records Contemporary Jazz charts. Swing Journal voted Kimiko Number 1 female vocalist in 1988–1996. In 2004, her cover of the song "Follow Me" was featured in the Mamoru Oshii-directed film Ghost in the Shell: Innocence.
